Decoding the Thai game

Four matchweeks in, Buriram United are on top of Thai League 1. Behind them, four clubs are level on nine points, Prachuap have climbed nine places in three weeks and Rayong have learned how quickly a table this tight can turn

The international break is over, the table has had its first proper shake, and the shape of it is this: Buriram United first, and a queue behind them. They are the only unbeaten team left in the division, with three wins and a draw, and Saturday’s 3–2 win over Rayong kept them top on 10 points. It was not comfortable, and nor is their lead. Uthai Thani, Bangkok United, Prachuap and Port all have nine.

The climbers

Follow the red line. Prachuap lost on the opening weekend and sat 13th. They have won three in a row since, the latest a 2–1 home win over Chiangrai United, and are fourth. They have conceded two goals in four matches, fewer than anyone else.

Uthai Thani’s line is the most erratic of the leaders: first, eighth, third, second. A 4–2 win over Rasisalai United took them to 11 goals, the most in the league. Bangkok United have followed a similar route, from second down to ninth and back up to third after winning 2–0 at Lamphun Warrior.

The biggest jump of the weekend belonged to Sisaket United, up four places to ninth after beating Chonburi 2–1. They lost their first two matches and have won the two since. Ratchaburi, meanwhile, put six past Sukhothai without reply on Friday night, rose three places to sixth and now have the best goal difference in the division at plus six.

The fallers

Rayong were second after both Matchweek 2 and Matchweek 3. One defeat, their first of the season, has dropped them five places to seventh. That is less a verdict on Rayong than on the congestion around them: two points separate second from eighth.

At the other end, Chonburi are the only club yet to take a point. Rasisalai United and Lamphun Warrior have one each and are still waiting for a first win. Pathum United, 10th with one win from four, are five points off the top.

What comes next

Four matches is not much of a season, and a chart like this one exaggerates every result while the points totals are so small. But Matchweek 5 will thin the queue. Bangkok United host Port on Sunday 18 October, third against fifth, and at least one of them will drop points. Uthai Thani go to Rayong on Saturday, Prachuap travel to Chonburi the same evening, and Buriram are away at Pattani on Sunday.
