Decoding the Thai game

Nineteen days without a league game end on Friday. Buriram United against Rayong is the only meeting of unbeaten sides on the card, Port start again under a third coach in five months, and every match is on AIS Play. Predicted line-ups, the numbers that matter and a committed score for all eight.

Thai League 1 has not kicked a ball since 20 September, and the gap has been filled by a national team that reached a final in Jakarta on Monday and lost it on penalties in front of 67,000 people. Matchweek 4 starts on Friday evening and runs to Sunday night, and it does not take long to find the game that frames it. Buriram United and Rayong are the only two unbeaten teams in the division, level on seven points, and they meet at the Chang Arena on Saturday. The champions have scored five; four of them belong to one man. The last meeting, in April, finished Rayong 3-0 Buriram United, with the title already decided. Below each fixture is a predicted XI, the numbers that should inform a score, and the score we are putting our name to. The Football Siam Predictor pays three points for an exact score and one for the result, and the manager at the top of the table at the end of October wins an official player shirt.

The story

Ratchaburi have the better of this on every number except the one that decides games, which is chances. The win over Bangkok United was a 1-0 built on six shots, and the draw at Rayong came from 16 shots that produced one goal. Three goals in three games, all before half-time, all from different scorers, is a side that starts well and then waits. Sukhothai arrive on a win over Port, which flatters a defence that has let in five, every one of them before the 47th minute, and has allowed 65 shots in three matches, the second-highest figure in the league. Their expected goals against is 6.72. Rattee Ueathanaphaisarn’s side have been living on Nathan, who has two goals in 138 minutes and one start. If Ratchaburi score early, which is what they do, Sukhothai have shown no sign yet of being able to come back.

One of two Ratchaburi players in our top ten of Thai outfielders after three matchweeks, and with the other, Jonathan Khemdee, out for the season, the one most likely to settle this. Two goals in 138 minutes, both from open play, one start. Sukhothai have scored three times this season and he has two of them. If he starts, which he should, Ratchaburi’s centre-backs have one job.

The managers

Worrawoot Srimaka (Ratchaburi) and Rattee Ueathanaphaisarn (Sukhothai). Worrawoot Srimaka took Ratchaburi to fourth last season and has started this one with a side that controls the ball, 56 per cent of it on average, without turning it into chances: 12 shots on target in three games. Rattee Ueathanaphaisarn was appointed by Sukhothai in June and has a win over Port to show for it, which bought a week of goodwill. Neither has spoken publicly about this fixture. Ratchaburi have beaten Sukhothai in each of the last two meetings, 1-0 at home in December and 2-1 away in April.

How they play

Ratchaburi shape as a 4-3-3 with Jonathan Viera and Roque Mesa, two Spaniards who have played in La Liga, setting a tempo the front three are not always on the end of. Bruno Mendes and Njiva Rakotoharimalala run the channels; Eakkanit is the one who arrives. Sukhothai sit in a 4-3-3 that becomes a 4-5-1 without the ball, which is most of the time: 40 per cent possession, 65 shots faced. The match-up is Viera’s passing against a Sukhothai midfield that has not yet protected its back four for a full half.

The story

Pathum United finished third last season and are eighth now, and the three games explain it in order. Nothing at Pattani from 17 shots. Three goals before the 36th minute against Rasisalai United, then two conceded. Two goals before half-time at Bangkok United, then three conceded, the last a penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Vladimir Vujović’s side have scored five, all before the 44th minute, and conceded five. Raniel has three of the five. Ayutthaya United are the promoted side that has been outshot in every game and has lost only one: 56 shots faced, 20 on target, three conceded, and a goalkeeper, Warut Mekmusik, who is the best-rated Thai player in the league with an 85 per cent save rate. Four different scorers, two of them centre-backs, is either depth or an attack that is not functioning, and the 1-2 defeat to Uthai Thani suggested the latter. Pathum have won both meetings in the last twelve months, 1-0 and 2-0, without conceding.

The best-rated Thai player in Thai League 1 after three matchweeks, outfield or not, at 7.72, with an 85 per cent save rate. Ayutthaya have faced 20 shots on target and conceded three. Against 14 Pathum shots a game, this is his afternoon more than anyone’s.

The managers

Vladimir Vujović (Pathum United) and Arun Tulwattanangkul (Ayutthaya United). Vujović has a problem he did not have a month ago: the two Thailand internationals he builds around, Sarach Yooyen and Waris Choolthong, played 120 minutes in Jakarta on Monday night and then took penalties. Arun Tulwattanangkul has Ayutthaya two points above Pathum with a promoted squad and a defensive plan that bends a long way, 56 shots faced, before it breaks. Ayutthaya have lost both meetings with Pathum in the last year and have not scored against them.

How they play

Pathum have moved between a back three and a back four; the last XI at Bangkok United was a 3-4-3 with Marko Nikolić as the spare man and Chanathip Songkrasin inside. They press high early, which is why every goal has come before the break, and tire, which is why five have gone in after it. Ayutthaya play a straight 4-3-3, sit at 46 per cent possession and counter through Lucas Dias and Willen Mota. The match-up is Pathum’s first 30 minutes against Ayutthaya’s last 30; the goals in Ayutthaya’s games have come at 59, 64 and 81.

The story

Buriram United have won the title, the FA Cup and the ASEAN Club Championship, changed head coach in the first week of September, drawn 1-1 at Johor Darul Ta’zim in the Champions League Elite, and still sit top with seven points from nine. The thing to notice is how. Five goals: four from Guilherme Bissoli, one an own goal by a Chonburi midfielder. Every one of the five arrived before the 47th minute; both goals conceded came in the 77th and 78th. Mário Silva’s side are 61 per cent possession and 59 shots, the third-highest total in the league, and they have not yet scored after half-time. Rayong are the mirror. Thirty-nine per cent of the ball, 39 shots, and four of their five goals after the interval, including the 87th-minute winner at Chonburi. In April, with the title already Buriram’s, Rayong beat them 3-0. It is the only time Rayong have beaten Buriram in eight meetings, and it is the most recent.

Two goals and an assist in 262 minutes, which is three of Rayong’s five goals touched. He scored the only goal against Prachuap, set up Renan after five minutes at Chonburi and converted the penalty against Ratchaburi. Rayong’s best spells come when he drops in and the wide men run beyond him.

The managers

Mário Silva (Buriram United) and Aktaporn Chalitaporn (Rayong). Mário Silva arrived on 8 September, three days before the Chiangrai game, after Mark Jackson left for Lion City Sailors with a treble in his pocket; Emerson and Zoran Mijanović held the room for a week. Silva’s league record is a draw and a win, and the Champions League Elite draw in Johor in between. Aktaporn Chalitaporn was appointed by Rayong in June, took a side that finished 12th and has them unbeaten and second. His record against Buriram is one match, the 3-0 in April, which he did not oversee: Jukkapant Punpee was still in charge then.

How they play

Buriram play a 4-3-3 that is really a 4-2-3-1 in possession, Theerathon Bunmathan at left-back and Kenneth Dougall holding. They score early because they start fast, and they have not scored late because the shape loses width when Silva changes it. Rayong play a compact 4-3-3 without the ball and stretch into a front four with it, João Afonso and Bruno Leite screening, both full-backs staying home. The match-up is Rayong’s low block in the first half-hour, when Buriram have scored all five, against Buriram’s patience after it.

Alexandre Gama’s side also have two red cards in three games, more than anyone. Rasisalai United are promoted and playing in the top flight for the first time, and their three matches read as a side that can score but cannot stop anyone: four goals, all between the 16th and 36th minutes, and 70 shots faced, the most in the league, with an expected goals against of 8.12. Sirisak Yodyardthai’s defence has conceded in the second minute, the 12th and the 24th. These clubs have never met. The managers

Alexandre Gama (Uthai Thani) and Sirisak Yodyardthai (Rasisalai United). Alexandre Gama took over at Uthai Thani in June, after leaving Port in May, and has them third with a squad that scores freely and defends badly in exactly the proportions his teams usually do. Sirisak Yodyardthai moved from Chiangrai United to Rasisalai in July and his side are 14th with a point. He has not beaten Uthai Thani because nobody at Rasisalai has ever played them.

How they play

Uthai Thani line up in a 3-5-2 with Davis and Roberto either side of Rattanakorn Maikami, whose 4.33 tackles per 90 is the most destructive number in our top ten; Enomoto and Willian Lira split the centre-backs. Rasisalai play a 3-4-3 that is really a 5-2-3 once the ball is lost, which is often: 37 per cent possession, 27 shots taken. The match-up is Uthai Thani’s wing-backs against a Rasisalai back three that has conceded six and a goalkeeper, Gabriel, who has one start.

Wattanachai Srathongjan has saved 89 per cent of the shots he has faced. Sasom Pobprasert’s side are fourth on six points, with Edgar Méndez involved in three of their four goals and a 3-0 win at Pattani that was the most complete away performance of the matchweek. Chiangrai United are the puzzle. Expected goals of 4.35, actual goals two; 32 shots, 12 on target, and a defeat to Sisaket United from a goal in the second minute of stoppage time. Worawut Wangsawad’s team have been better than their results in every game and have four points to show for it. Chiangrai have scored twice this season and he has a goal and an assist, which is both of them. The equaliser at Buriram in the 77th minute was the best goal of their season. Against a defence that has conceded once, he is the only Chiangrai player who has shown he can find the gap.

The managers

Sasom Pobprasert (Prachuap) and Worawut Wangsawad (Chiangrai United). Sasom Pobprasert took Prachuap to 12th last season and has them fourth now by doing the unglamorous thing, 47 per cent possession and 29 shots, and defending the box. Worawut Wangsawad replaced Sirisak Yodyardthai at Chiangrai in July and inherited a side whose shots are not turning into goals; the gap between expected and actual goals is the biggest in the league bar Sisaket United’s. Neither coach has beaten the other. Prachuap’s two wins over Chiangrai last season were under Sasom; Chiangrai’s coach then was Sirisak.

How they play

Prachuap play a 4-3-3 that defends as a 4-5-1, with Kannarin Thawornsak and Rei Tachikawa in front of a back four that has conceded one. Edgar Méndez drifts left to right; Tauã holds the line; Andros Townsend, who started the first two games, should come back in on the right in place of Lucas Grossi. Chiangrai play a 4-4-2, Robson and Douglas up top, Harhys Stewart and Wanderson in the middle, 42 per cent possession. The match-up is Chiangrai’s shots, 32 of them, against Wattanachai’s 89 per cent save rate. One side has to break pattern.

Prachuap 1-0 Chiangrai United. The tightest game on the card, settled by a Prachuap penalty or a set piece and a third clean sheet. The last five meetings averaged nearly three goals, but neither of these teams has looked like that side this season.

The story

Lamphun Warrior have taken 64 shots, the second-highest total in the league, and scored three times. They have faced 44 and conceded seven. Dennis Amato’s side are 15th with a point from the draw at Rasisalai United, and the shape of their defeats is identical: 1-4 at home to Uthai Thani with three goals conceded between the 14th and 39th minutes, 1-2 at Port with a penalty conceded in the 14th minute. Bangkok United are fifth with six points and a problem that nobody has written about: they have faced 23 shots, six on target, and conceded four. Totchtawan Sripan’s side have scored six, five of them before the 40th minute, three by Weerathep Pomphan from midfield. The last two meetings were both at Lamphun in February and both went Lamphun’s way or nowhere, 2-1 and 1-1. Bangkok United have not won in Lamphun since January 2025.

Three goals in 236 minutes from midfield, with an expected goals figure of 2.28: he is arriving in the right places rather than finishing from the wrong ones. One goal in his previous 12,800 league minutes, three in his last 236. Lamphun have conceded five goals before the 40th minute, which is when he scores.

The managers

Dennis Amato (Lamphun Warrior) and Totchtawan Sripan (Bangkok United). Dennis Amato took Lamphun to eighth last season, and the numbers say his side are unlucky rather than bad this time: 5.00 expected goals in the two matches where it was recorded, three goals in all. Totchtawan Sripan took Bangkok United to second last season and has the best midfield in the league scoring and the worst goalkeeping numbers in it conceding. He lost here in February and drew here three days later.

How they play

Lamphun play a 4-4-1-1 with Mohammed Osman as the link and Rodrigo alone, 50 per cent possession, a high volume of shots from outside the box. Bangkok United play a 4-2-3-1, Weerathep and Thitipan Puangchan breaking from deep, Anthony Caceres creating, Kakana Khamyok a possible starter behind the front man after featuring in Monday’s final, and Teerasil Dangda the reference point without a goal in 211 minutes. The match-up is Bangkok United’s first half against Lamphun’s, because both sides’ games are decided by the 40th minute.

The story

Chonburi are bottom with nothing, three defeats by a single goal each, and the game they have been playing is not the game their results describe. They have had more of the ball than every opponent, 57 per cent on average, and have taken 45 shots, but only eight have been on target. The 0-1 defeat to Buriram United was decided by an own goal in the eighth minute. Rangsan Viwatchaichok’s promoted side have scored at 58 and 82 minutes and not before. Sisaket United are 13th with three points, from a 90+2 winner at Chiangrai, and are the league’s biggest underperformers against expected goals: 5.18 for, two scored. Somchai Chuayboonchum’s side have conceded four and kept one clean sheet. The two previous meetings, both in Thai League 2, were a 1-1 draw at Sisaket and a 5-0 Chonburi win in February 2025. This is a match between the two teams whose shots are worth least.

The 90+2 winner at Chiangrai is the only goal Sisaket have scored from open play in 270 minutes. Chonburi have conceded five, the last two in the 48th and 87th; a forward who plays to the final whistle is the one most likely to add to that.

Chonburi’s goal against Rayong, their first in the top flight since promotion, and 270 minutes of a forward being asked to turn 57 per cent possession into something. Eight shots on target from 45 is the number he has to change; Sisaket have conceded four from 13.

The managers

Somchai Chuayboonchum (Sisaket United) and Rangsan Viwatchaichok (Chonburi). Rangsan Viwatchaichok brought Chonburi up as Thai League 2 champions and has had three games to learn that the top flight punishes a side that cannot hit the target. Somchai Chuayboonchum took Sisaket to 10th last season and has a side creating more than it scores. Nattapong Sayriya, Chonburi’s full-back, took Thailand’s last penalty in Monday’s shoot-out and saw it saved by Audero; how he is used on Sunday is a decision Rangsan has to make in public.

How they play

Sisaket play a 4-2-4 that is really a 4-4-2 with the wide forwards dropping, Steven van Dijk in goal, Guilherme Baldo and Issac Honey the centre-backs. Chonburi play a 4-2-3-1 with Tristan Do at full-back, Ryoma Ito wide and Stenio central; they keep the ball and shoot from range. The match-up is Chonburi’s possession against a Sisaket side that has scored both its goals, a penalty and a stoppage-time winner, from almost nothing.

The story

Port have had the ball more than anyone, 69 per cent on average, and shot more than anyone, 77 times in three games, and they are sixth, because at Sukhothai they took 26 shots, generated 3.51 expected goals and lost 1-2. That defeat, days after a 1-2 at Vissel Kobe, cost Sarawut ‘Oud’ Treephan his job; he has since re-emerged at Nara, in Thai League 3 South. Božidar Bandović, who has managed Buriram, Prachuap, Sisaket and BEC Tero, takes charge of his first league match on Sunday. He does so with Peeradol Chamratsamee, Manuel Bihr, Chaiyaphon Otton, Seksan Ratree, Jude Soonsup-Bell and Teerasak Poeiphimai back from a national-team fortnight that ended with 120 minutes and a shoot-out in Jakarta on Monday; Peeradol scored in extra time. Pattani are the other promoted side, 11th with four points, and the team that has shot least in the league: 25 attempts in three games, nine on target. They have conceded four, three of them at home to Prachuap, and will be without Kirati Kaewnongdang, sent off in that game. These clubs have never met.

Thirty-four years old, the best-rated Thai outfield player in the league at 7.59, two goals in 270 league minutes and a third in the 111th minute of a national-team final five days before this game. Four shots per 90 from central midfield. The question is not whether he plays but how much is left.

Pattani’s goalkeeper has faced 16 shots on target and conceded four. Port average 26 shots a game and seven on target. Pattani have held Pathum United to a 0-0 with him in goal; a repeat requires the afternoon of his season.

The managers

Božidar Bandović (Port) and Harnarong Chunhakunakorn (Pattani). Bandović is Port’s third head coach since May, following Alexandre Gama and Sarawut ‘Oud’ Treephan, and his previous Thai spells include a league title at Buriram and stints at Prachuap, Sisaket and BEC Tero. His Port have not yet played. Harnarong Chunhakunakorn’s Pattani have come from Thai League 3 to the top flight in consecutive seasons and have four points from the first three games with a squad built on a Brazilian spine. He has never faced Port; nobody at Pattani has.

How they play

Port under Sarawut were a 4-3-3 that attacked with seven, Shimura Noboru the pivot, Kaka Mendes on the left, Lucas Costa on the right and Issam Al Sabhi through the middle; 69 per cent possession and 77 shots is a side that lives in the opposition half. Whether Bandović keeps that is the matchweek’s open question; his sides have historically been more cautious, and Erik Sviatchenko returning to the back four and Seksan Ratree in midfield are the two changes we expect him to make. Pattani play a 5-3-2 that defends deep and breaks through Igor Neves and Carlos Neto, 50 per cent of the ball and the fewest shots in the league. The match-up is Port’s crossing against a five-man defence missing one of its five.

Port 3-1 Pattani. A new coach’s first game usually produces a fast start, and Port already start fast: goals at 2 and 14 minutes this season. Pattani score once on the break against a defence that has conceded four, and the men back from Jakarta are managed off before the end.
