Thirty years old and still capable of throwing up a genuinely chaotic opening round: Thai League 1 kicked off its 2026/27 season across eight fixtures between 4 and 6 September, and by full time on Sunday very little of the pre-season script had survived contact with reality. Buriram United, defending a fifth straight title, did exactly what champions are supposed to do. Newly promoted Pattani did rather better than anyone had a right to expect. And Rasisalai United discovered, in the space of four second-half minutes, precisely how unforgiving the top flight can be.

Pattani 0-0 BG Pathum United

Pattani’s first-ever Thai League 1 fixture asked an immediate question of a newly promoted side: could they live with the division’s traffic? For 90 minutes, mostly, the answer was yes. BG Pathum enjoyed the numbers that count for little without end product — 60% of possession, seventeen attempts, only three of them troubling the goalkeeper — while Pattani, set up in a disciplined 4-3-3, ceded territory happily and defended their box with real conviction. There is a version of promoted life that ends in chastening afternoons like this one, avoided entirely. A point at Tinsulanon, in front of a relocated but grateful home crowd, will do nicely as a starting line.

Chiangrai United 1-0 Chonburi

Douglas Souza doesn’t need much invitation. Chonburi had the better of general play — 64% possession, thirteen attempts, long spells camped in Chiangrai’s third — but a moment’s carelessness on the left let Robinho feed Souza, who took one touch and drove low from the edge of the box in the 31st minute. It was enough. Chiangrai’s head coach admitted afterwards the goal owed something to a refereeing slip rather than design, but three points care nothing for style. Chonburi will wonder how they leave with nothing; Chiangrai, unbeaten in six, will simply enjoy the view from the top of the table.

Bangkok United 3-1 Sisaket United

There is a species of debut nobody wants, and Sisaket, newly promoted and away at a well-drilled Bangkok United, found it early. Thitiphan Puangchan opened the scoring inside sixteen minutes, and Weerathep Pompan — mercurial, and rather pleased with himself — helped himself to two more either side of the half-hour to put the game beyond argument. Patrick Valverde‘s stoppage-time penalty was mere consolation, and worse followed: the forward was shown a straight red moments later after a VAR review, leaving Sisaket to play out the remainder with ten men and rather too much time to reflect on a chastening opening afternoon.

Rasisalai United 1-2 Port

Rasisalai’s first taste of the top flight had promise written all over it until the final quarter-hour arrived and took it away again. The newly promoted side led for long spells before Port, patient and increasingly dominant, found their leveller and then, in the 86th minute, a winner from Marcel that had the away end celebrating with the particular relief reserved for stolen points. For Rasisalai it was a cruel first lesson in a league where composure in the closing stages is worth rather more than the courage to lead in the first.

Rayong 1-0 PT Prachuap

Not much to trouble the highlights reel here, and Rayong’s newly appointed head coach will not mind one bit. João Felipe‘s finish moments after the restart proved the difference in a match short on incident and long on the nervous, low-event football typical of opening weeks. Prachuap could point to fine margins, but Rayong’s discipline in a game with little to separate the sides earned exactly the kind of unspectacular three points that head coaches quietly treasure over the flashier alternative.

Ayutthaya United 2-1 Ratchaburi

Ayutthaya’s first meaningful statement of the new season arrived at home, and it was a good one. Hwang Hyun-soo gave the hosts an eighth-minute lead that Ratchaburi’s Thanawat Suengjittawon cancelled out just before the break, setting up a contest that felt evenly poised until Everton, introduced from the bench, won it with 11 minutes remaining. For a club still finding its level in the top division, seeing off a side of Ratchaburi’s pedigree carries real weight — a match settled, in the end, by moments of individual quality rather than sustained pressure.

Lamphun Warriors 1-4 Uthai Thani

Uthai Thani travelled to Lamphun and left with the sort of scoreline that reorders early-season assumptions. Willian Lira helped himself to two, Benjamin Davis added a third with a composed finish through on goal just before the interval, and by the time Rodrigo Maranhão pulled one back for the hosts midway through the second half the contest had long since been settled. It was a statement of attacking intent from a side many had pencilled in for a quieter campaign, and it leaves Uthai Thani, rather improbably, sitting top of the pile after round one.

Sukhothai 1-3 Buriram United

Guilherme Bissoli‘s hat-trick carries the unmistakable signature of a man reminding the division who is champion. Buriram’s Brazilian forward converted a fourteenth-minute penalty, added a second in the fortieth and completed his treble in first-half stoppage time, by which point the contest had effectively ended before the break had even begun. Nathan Palafox‘s late consolation for Sukhothai arrived far too late to matter. It was the sort of ruthless opening-day statement expected of five-time defending champions, even if their head coach’s post-match remarks suggested there remain details to sharpen before the serious business of the title defence begins in earnest.
